Using Validation to Verify Intervention Results

Validation automatically generates a before-and-after comparison report of asset condition data after an event is resolved. Use this feature to confirm whether your intervention fixed the problem, had no effect, or made the condition worse.


Before You Start

  • Validation reports are only generated for events that have been resolved. Open or in-progress events do not have a Validation report.

  • The report is generated automatically after a configurable number of days following event resolution. You do not need to trigger it manually.


What Is Validation and Why It Matters

When you resolve an event (for example, fixing an unbalance detected through vibration monitoring) there is typically no structured way to confirm whether the repair actually worked. The common approach is to wait and see if new alerts appear, which is slow and unreliable.

Validation solves this. After you resolve an event, the platform automatically collects condition data from the asset (vibration, ultrasound, temperature, and other available signals) for the post-intervention period and compares it against the equivalent period before the event.

The result is an Improvement Report that classifies the intervention into one of three categories:

Improvement Observed

Condition data shows a reduction in fault indicators after the intervention. The repair had a measurable positive effect.

No Improvement Observed

Condition data remained stable; no significant change after the intervention.

Worsening Observed

Condition data got worse after the intervention. Fault indicators increased compared to the pre-repair period.

💡 Tip: Over time, Validation reports build a history of which intervention types work for each failure mode and asset type. This helps your team make evidence-based maintenance decisions.


How to Access the Validation List

  1. In the top navigation bar, click Monitoring.

  2. In the secondary navigation bar (below the main menu), click the Validation tab.

    • The number next to the tab name indicates how many validations are available

The validation list displays all recently resolved events that have a Validation report.

What You See in the List

Each item in the list shows:

  • Fault name (for example, Unbalance, Cavitation, Mechanical Looseness).

  • Classification tag: indicates the validation result — Worsening Observed, No Improvement Observed, or Improvement Observed.

  • Archiving notice (when applicable): items with Improvement Observed show "Archiving in X days", indicating they will be automatically archived.

  • Asset location: unit, plant, and asset name.

  • Reference to the original event: insight number (for example, #222) that triggered the validation.

  • Creation date and author.

Filter Validations by Result

At the top of the list, use the filter chips to view only validations of a specific type:

  1. Click Worsening Observed to see only cases where the condition got worse.

  2. Click No Improvement Observed to see cases with no change.

  3. Click Improvement Observed to see cases with confirmed improvement.

Each filter displays the item count in parentheses (for example, "Worsening Observed 2").


How to View a Validation Report

  1. In the validation list, find the event you want to analyze.

  2. Click the ✦ View Analysis button on the right side of the item.

The Validation panel opens, displaying the detailed report.

Understanding the Validation Report

The report is divided into the following sections:

Classification Summary (top of the panel)

The report header shows:

  • Classification title: indicates the overall result. Examples:

    • "Worsening trend detected" (for worsening).

    • "Your repair has shown improvements!" (for improvement).

  • Summary description: a text-based analysis explaining what the data shows. For example, whether vibration energy and frequency components increased or decreased.

  • Asset and event card: shows the asset name, classification tag, and linked insight number. Click it to navigate to the original event.

Detailed Analysis

Below the summary, the Detailed Analysis section presents the technical data. To expand or collapse it, click Collapse / Expand in the upper-right corner of the section.

1. Before and After Spectrum

Displays a frequency spectrum chart comparing two lines:

  • Initial Detection (orange): spectrum collected at the time of event detection, before the intervention.

  • Post-Intervention (blue): spectrum collected after the event was resolved.

The collection dates for each are shown in the legend below the chart (for example, "Mar 13 at 10:00 AM" and "Mar 18 at 10:00 AM").

The report also includes a text-based analysis of the spectrum. Keywords are color-coded for quick reading:

  • Text in orange (for example, "increased") indicates worsening values.

  • Text in green (for example, "decreased") indicates improving values.

2. Vibration Comparison

Below the spectrum, three bar charts compare pre- and post-intervention values for specific metrics:

Each metric displays:

  • The numeric value before (red bar, "Pre-Intervention") and after (blue bar, "Post-Intervention").

  • The percentage change with a directional arrow:

    • ↑ X% (in orange): value increased — the condition worsened for this metric.

    • ↓ X% (in green): value decreased — the condition improved for this metric.

Important: A worsening in a single metric does not necessarily mean the intervention failed. Analyze all metrics together with the spectrum to get the full picture.


How to Dismiss a Validation

If a validation is no longer relevant (for example, the asset was decommissioned or the validation was generated in error), you can remove it from the list.

  1. In the validation list, find the item you want to dismiss.

  2. Click the (close) icon on the right side of the item, next to the View Analysis button.

Important: Make sure you want to dismiss the validation before clicking. This action may be irreversible depending on your platform configuration.


How to Share a Validation Report

  1. Open the validation report by clicking ✦ View Analysis.

  2. In the upper-right corner of the panel, click Copy link.

  3. Paste the copied link into any channel (email, chat, message) to share with colleagues.

💡 Tip: Sharing the report link is useful for reliability meeting discussions or for attaching evidence to work orders.


Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for the Validation report to be generated?

The report is generated automatically after a configurable period following event resolution. The default period depends on your company's configuration. The system needs this time to collect enough post-intervention condition data.

Can I generate a Validation manually?

No. Validation is generated automatically by the platform. You do not need to — and cannot — trigger it manually.

What does "Archiving in X days" mean?

Validations with an Improvement Observed result are automatically archived after a set period, since the case is considered successfully closed. The countdown indicates how many days remain before archiving.

Can I view Validation on mobile?

Yes. Validation is available on both the desktop and mobile versions of the platform.

Does Validation work with any sensor type?

Validation uses whatever data is available for the asset — vibration, ultrasound, temperature, and other signals collected by the installed Tractian sensors. If an asset only has a temperature sensor, the report will be based on that signal alone.
