Updated today

What Is This Spreadsheet For?

This spreadsheet lets you manage the measurement units used across your supply inventory in TRACTIAN. Use it to add new units (like "Kilogram" or "Liter"), update existing ones, or remove units that are no longer needed.

Can I Import, Export, or Both?

  • Import (upload data into TRACTIAN): Yes

  • Export (download data from TRACTIAN): Yes

Columns in Detail

ID

  • This is the unique identifier assigned by TRACTIAN to each measurement unit. When you export your data, this column is filled automatically. You only need to enter it when updating or removing an existing unit.

Name

  • The full name of the measurement unit as it will appear throughout TRACTIAN. For example: "Kilogram", "Meter", "Liter". Each name must be unique — you cannot have two units with the same name.

Plural Variation

  • The plural form of the unit name. For example, if the name is "Kilogram", the plural variation would be "Kilograms". This is used when displaying quantities greater than one.

Abbreviation

  • A short label for the unit. For example: "kg" for Kilogram, "L" for Liter, "m" for Meter. This appears in compact views and reports.

ID After Deletion

  • When you remove a measurement unit, any items currently using that unit need to be reassigned to a different one. Enter the ID of the replacement unit here. You can find the ID by exporting your current units first. This column is only required when the Operation is "remove".

Operation

  • Tells the system what to do with each row. Choose one of these options:

    • add — Create a new measurement unit

    • remove — Delete this unit (you must also fill in "ID After Deletion")

    • replace — Update an existing unit's details (you must include the ID)

    • keep — No changes. This is the default value when you export data

Custom Fields

This spreadsheet does not include custom fields.

Tips for a Successful Import

  • Make sure every row has a value in the Operation column — the system needs to know what action to take.

  • When adding a new unit, the Name column is required. The system will automatically generate an internal key from the name.

  • When removing a unit, you must fill in both the ID and ID After Deletion columns. The replacement unit must already exist in TRACTIAN.

  • When updating a unit, include the ID so the system knows which unit to modify.

  • The Operation column only accepts the exact values listed above — custom text will cause an error.

  • If you leave an optional column blank (like Plural Variation or Abbreviation), the existing value in TRACTIAN will not be changed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I upload a unit with a name that already exists?

The import will fail for that row. Each measurement unit must have a unique name. If you want to update an existing unit, use the "replace" operation with the unit's ID.

Can I remove a measurement unit that is being used by inventory items?

Yes, but you must specify a replacement unit in the "ID After Deletion" column. All items using the removed unit will be reassigned to the replacement.

What happens if I leave the Operation column blank?

The import will show an error for that row. Every row must have an operation value.

How do I find the ID of an existing measurement unit?

Export your current measurement units first. The exported spreadsheet will include the ID column filled in for every existing unit.

What does "keep" mean in the Operation column?

It means "no changes". When you export data, all rows are marked as "keep" by default. You can change the operation for rows you want to modify and leave the rest as "keep" — those rows will be ignored during import.
