Filter Assets and Customize Your View in the Asset Tree

Updated this week

Learn how to use filters, adjust display settings, and switch between view modes on the Assets page to quickly find and manage the equipment you need.

Before you Start

  • You must have access to the Assets tab in Tractian. If you don't see it in the top navigation bar, contact your company's Tractian administrator to check your permissions.

  • Filters display only the values that exist in your asset tree. For example, the Criticality filter only shows criticality levels that have been assigned to at least one asset.

Filter assets in the tree

Use filters to narrow down the asset tree and focus on specific equipment, locations, or conditions.

  1. In the top navigation bar, click Assets to open the Assets page.

  2. In the left panel, above the asset tree, click Filters.

  3. A dropdown menu appears with the available filter categories. Click on any category to expand its options:

Filter

What it does

Available values

Assignee

Shows only assets and locations assigned to a specific user or team.

Lists all users and teams registered in your company.

Sensor

Shows only assets that have a specific sensor model installed — or no sensor at all. Options are grouped by sensor category (e.g., Vibration).

Sensor models available in your company (e.g., Smart Trac, Smart Trac Pro, Smart Trac UG1, Smart Trac Ultra Ex, Smart Trac UG2), plus No Sensor to find unmonitored assets.

Status

Shows only assets with a specific health status based on monitoring data.

Danger, Warning, Observe, Normal.

Operation

Shows only assets in a specific operational state.

Operating, Idle, Offline.

Criticality

Shows only assets classified at a specific criticality level.

0 - Catastrophic, 1 - High, 2 - Moderate, 3 - Low, No Criticality.

Equipment Type

Shows only assets that match a specific equipment category.

Lists all equipment types registered in your asset tree (e.g., pumps, boilers, compressors, motors).

Tags

Shows only assets and locations that have specific tags applied.

Lists all tags registered in your company.

Disabled Only

Hides all active items and shows only assets and locations that have been deactivated.

Checkbox — check to enable.

  1. When you click a category (e.g., Operation), a sub-menu opens with checkboxes for each value. Check one or more values to apply the filter.

  2. After selecting your criteria, the asset tree updates automatically to show only matching results.

  3. To remove all active filters, click Clear at the bottom of the Filters dropdown.

💡 Tip: You can combine multiple filters at the same time. For example, select Criticality → 0 - Catastrophic and Operation → Operating to see all catastrophic assets that are currently running.

💡 Tip: Each filter sub-menu includes a Search field at the top. Use it to quickly find a specific value when the list is long (e.g., searching for a specific equipment type or tag).

Important: When you navigate away from the Assets page, your active filters are cleared. You will need to reapply them when you return.

Customize asset tree display

The Display menu controls what additional information is shown next to each asset and location in the tree.

  1. In the left panel, above the asset tree, click Display.

  2. A dropdown appears with toggle switches. Adjust the following options:

Display option

What it controls

Default state

Asset Status

Shows or hides the health status indicators (e.g., Danger, Observe, Normal counts) next to each location in the tree.

On (enabled)

Metrics

Shows or hides additional metric indicators (e.g., sensor counts, monitoring data) next to each location in the tree.

On (enabled)

  1. Click the toggle to turn each option on (blue) or off (grey).

  2. The asset tree updates immediately to reflect your display preferences.

💡 Tip: If your asset tree feels visually cluttered, try turning off Metrics to simplify the view. You can always turn it back on when you need that information.

Expand or collapse the asset tree

  1. In the left panel, above the asset tree, click Expand.

  2. Click Expand to toggle between:

    • Expanded view: All locations and nested assets are visible in the tree.

    • Collapsed view: Only top-level locations are visible. Click the arrow next to any location to manually expand it.

💡 Tip: Collapsing the tree is useful when you have a large asset hierarchy and want to reduce visual clutter before drilling into a specific location.

Switch between Tree view and Table view

The Assets page offers two view modes. Switch between them depending on what you need to do.

Tree view (default)

Displays your locations and assets in a hierarchical structure that mirrors your physical plant layout (e.g., Company → Facilities → Production → Equipment).

Best for: navigating your asset hierarchy, checking asset details, and understanding where equipment is located within your plant structure.

Table view

Displays your assets in a flat table with rows and columns. Each row represents one asset, and columns show key information.

Best for: comparing multiple assets at once, quickly scanning statuses and criticality levels, and reviewing data across your entire plant.

How to switch views

  1. On the Assets page, look at the left sidebar: you'll see a tree icon (hierarchical structure) and a grid icon (table) stacked vertically.

  2. Click the tree icon to switch to Tree view, or click the grid icon to switch to Table view.

  3. The page reloads to display your assets in the selected format. Any active filters remain applied when you switch views.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do filters affect what other users see?

No. Filters and display settings are applied only to your own view. Other users' views are not affected.

Why do I see no results after applying a filter?

This means no assets in your tree match the filter criteria you selected. Try removing one filter at a time to identify which criterion is too restrictive. Also check whether you have the Disabled Only checkbox active. This hides all active assets and shows only deactivated ones.

Can I use filters in Table view?

Yes. Filters work the same way in both Tree and Table view modes.

What is the difference between "Status" and "Operation" filters?

The Status filter relates to the asset's health condition as determined by sensor monitoring data: Danger, Warning, Observe, or Normal. The Operation filter relates to whether the asset is currently running: Operating, Idle, or Offline.
