What is the Smart Trac?
The Smart Trac is an IoT sensor that monitors vibration, temperature, runtime hours, and RPM on industrial machines. It connects to the internet through the Smart Receiver, which automatically selects the best available cellular network.
Each sensor is identified by a unique ID code (three letters + four numbers, for example: BRX4242). You can find this ID below the QR code on the sensor housing.
Important: Do not use this device in environments containing flammable gases, dust, or fiber-laden atmospheres. For hazardous areas, contact Tractian about the Smart Trac Ex sensor, which meets hazardous area certification requirements.
Measurement Parameters
Parameter | Specification |
Frequency range | 0 Hz to 32,000 Hz |
Acceleration | Up to 16 g |
Velocity | Up to 100 mm/s RMS |
Surface temperature | –40°F to +248°F |
Default collection interval | Samples every 5 minutes |
The sensor collects triaxial vibration data (X, Y, Z axes) and provides readings for velocity, acceleration, temperature, and hour meter.
Physical Characteristics
Attribute | Specification |
Dimensions (without base) | 40 × 71 × 40 mm (1.6 × 2.8 × 1.6 in) |
Max height with base | 87 mm (3.4 in) |
Weight | 180 g (6.4 oz) |
Mounting methods | Structural adhesive or M8×1.25 screw on the asset housing |
Environmental Characteristics
Attribute | Specification |
IP rating | IP69K |
Surface temperature range | –40°F to +248°F |
Ambient temperature range | –40°F to +194°F |
Humidity | Suitable for installation in high-humidity areas |
About IP69K protection:
Full protection against solid particles, including dust.
Protection against rain, water jets, and steam.
Does not protect against submersion.
Safe Operating Range
Safe operation depends on the combined values of surface and ambient temperature. Even if each value is individually within range, certain combinations are not safe.
As a general rule: the higher the surface temperature, the lower the maximum safe ambient temperature. Refer to the Safe Operating Range graph in the Smart Trac Instruction Manual for the exact combined limits.
Battery and Power
Attribute | Specification |
Type | Lithium battery |
Typical lifespan | 3 years |
Wireless Communication (Sensor ↔ Receiver)
Attribute | Specification |
Frequency | 915 MHz ISM |
Protocol | IEEE 802.15.4g |
Encryption | AES 128-bit |
Open-field range | Up to 0.6 miles (depends on plant topology) |
Indoor range | Up to 330 feet (depends on plant topology) |
Important: Indoor range is significantly affected by physical obstacles such as metal walls, concrete structures, machines, and tanks. Maintain a clear line of sight between sensors and the receiver whenever possible.
Chemical Resistance
The Smart Trac housing is resistant to a wide range of industrial chemicals, including common solvents, alcohols, oils, fuels, and detergents. Resistance levels vary by substance.
Key points to keep in mind:
Chemical resistance ratings apply to sensors installed using the screw mounting method.
Adhesive mounting is not recommended for environments with prolonged exposure to chlorine or substances with high oxidative potential.
Some strong acids (such as hydrofluoric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid) have low chemical resistance and may damage the sensor housing.
For the full chemical resistance table or to validate compatibility with a specific substance in your environment, contact Tractian support.
Warning: Tractian is not responsible for damage resulting from contact with materials classified as low chemical resistance.

Precautions
Follow these rules to avoid damaging the sensor and voiding warranty:
Do not install the Smart Trac in locations where ambient temperature exceeds 194°F.
Do not clean the device with solvents such as acetone, hydrocarbons, ethers, or esters.
Do not subject the device to excessive mechanical impact, dropping, crushing, or scraping.
Do not modify the Smart Trac under any circumstances. Any operational issues must be reported to and handled by Tractian.
